Humble Walk
St. Paul, Minnesota
Humble Walk Lutheran Church is a community of folks gathering around about the West 7th Neighborhood of Saint Paul. If you are looking for a community, you are welcome, because you already belong. They are community builders, art makers, a church collective that seeks to nurture those on the margins of society
Worship
Humble Walk punctuates the liturgical calendar with various artists: visual, musical, young, and old. Their worship life follows the ancient pattern: Gather, Word, Meal, Send. They are not afraid to take risks within that ancient pattern–which they regularly do.
Their table is open. Communion is inclusive for those with allergies, and is taken with juice not wine. They are unabashedly open and affirming (LGBTQ).
This worship gathering might offer healing from previous ideas of what church is--it is a place to rest and reimagine what church can be.
Youth and Families
Humble Walk has, at its core, people. People of God. Followers of Jesus. Conduits of the Holy Spirit.
Some are big, some are small. Some are old, some are young.
Some bring their own family with them, some don’t…but all are part of the Humble Walk community.
At Humble Walk, the community is mindful of children and that their church experience is not passive. While their numbers are small and they have no need for a Sunday School Superintendent, they teach their children, include their children, and worship with their children. When they say, “All are welcome”…they mean it.
Do you know who is not efficient and streamlined? Kids. They will not be rushed. They don’t give a rip about your plans for a shortened worship. Thank God. Because it’s way better this way.
What is Humble Walk up to?
In addition to Sunday evening worship, the community of Humble Walk engages in life together in the following ways:
Art in the Park: During the some Sundays in summer, they gather in the park and for pretty wild art projects.
Meals: They like to eat, and have been known to have the occasional potluck. Sometimes worship service takes place over dinner tables together. Some summer evenings they have a giant potluck in the street, other times they have meal liturgies, sometimes before church they have tea, hot chocolate, coffee, and snacks. They dwell in the possibility of food at all times and in all places.
Music and Arts
Artists-in-Residence: This program features local, regional, national, and international musicians and artists. These artists may bring the community back to the familiar, or teach something new. They may bring along their own liturgies. Whatever and however, there is learning, stretching, growing, worshipping.
Beer and Hymns: They have heard the people, and the people want beer and singing! That’s sing-at-the-top-of-your-lungs-in-four-part-harmony singing. Periodically, they gather at a local pub and sing with reckless abandon. Some with beer, some with soda, some with burgers, and some with vegetarian options. They sing and are transformed in the process. (Many cry because it’s so powerful. Others go home hoarse because they can’t help themselves from singing so boldly.) It’s a holy thing, this communal song.
Humble Walk: The Album
The community at Humble Walk likes to share their music with others. Many guest singers and songwriters write songs specifically for their worship community. You can buy and download on the Humble Walk Bandcamp page, either digitally or on CD.
Planning a visit?
Humble Walk doesn’t meet on the first Sunday of the month which is a “sabbath.” During the school year, the second and fourth Sundays are Worship and the third Sunday is Dinner Church.
